The Box of Riches is required to be able to get gemstones. When entering the shop, if it is in your inventory, it will give you one common rarity gemstone and put it next to the box in your inventory if it can, otherwise it gets thrown into the storage area.
While you have at least 1 Box of Riches in your inventory you will be able to find gemstones of any rarity in the shop.
The "shop entered" effect does not activate if the item is in storage.
